Infotility, Inc. Wins 3-Year ConEd/DOE 3G-System of the Future R&D Demonstration Project

Features GridAgents Framework Software for Asset Optimization, Fault Detection, Demand Response, and Distributed Energy Resource Control for the SmartGrid

Boulder, CO – February 8, 2007 – Infotility, Inc. leading provider of SmartGrid software solutions, today announced that the company has been awarded and has begun R&D and demonstration projects co-funded by the Department of Energy’s Electric Distribution Transformation Program, and ConEdison, the New York based electric utility.

This three year project represents the convergence of several advanced research and development initiatives which share a common vision for building, evolving, and transforming the current electric delivery infrastructure into what many envision to be the next-generation “Smart Grid”. These different but parallel initiatives include (1) Con Edison’s 3G: System of the Future (3G/SOF) development efforts and (2) Infotility’s GridAgents: DER and Distribution Network Control Framework (GridAgents) currently being developed under the DOE GridWise SBIR program funding.

This “Smart Grid” development convergence will continue to be guided by ongoing industry consortium efforts such as GridWise, GridWorks, and Intelligrid with the goal of achieving both ConEdison’s’ and the DOE Office of Electric Delivery and Electric Reliability (OEDER) long term electric delivery goals. David Cohen, Gridagent’s CEO indicates that “the ConEd / DOE project provides us with the opportunity to demonstrate GridAgent’s capabilities and flexibility in one of the most complex urban environments, completing GridAgents R&D using real use scenarios and equipment on microgrids across ConEd’s distribution network. This work will ensure that the commercialization of GridAgents technologies are right on the market, addressing the needs of utilities in the near future.”

The Con Edison 3G: System of the Future is an ongoing project to design the “Third Generation” electric system that will be the basis for power delivery into the future, using advanced technologies to meet new operating and customer electric demands, maintain reliability, optimize costs, and ensure security. The 3G System of the Future is implementing a modernization of its electric network design to optimize its configurations of substations, and Primary and secondary distributions systems. The general design principles supported by the 3G/SOF project include:

  • Inclusion of distributed resources
  • Consider Substation load transfer
  • Application of HVDC
  • Higher distribution voltage (27kV, 33kV, 33+kV)
  • Minimal secondary grid with advanced intelligence and distributed software
  • Company-deployed mobile DER assets ("plug-n-play")

About Infotility. Infotility is the leading provider of real-time Collaborative Stream Processing (CSP) software that monitors and processes streaming data from any source or device, aggregating and coordinating information from multiple sources, assuring accessibility, usefulness, security, and survivability across any network. GridAgents' software is applicable to any community of smart devices or sensors on the Pervasive Internet in the Sensor-Tagged world, where latency, immediacy, complex analytic/business rules, end-point processing, and security are critical issues, and the overheads of complex database management systems are of concern. GridAgents, with headquarters in Boulder, Colorado, is the major business unit of Infotility, Inc., a software and services company which was formed in 2000.
